A New Institution will be Founded in Valmiera - the Bertāns Valmiera Basketball SchoolPrint
On Thursday 10 September, at a meeting of the Valmiera City Council, deputies decided to support the founding of the Bertāns Valmiera Basketball School. At a press conference held in the presence of NBA and Latvia national basketball team star Dāvis Bertāns, VALMIERA GLASS VIA Basketball Club General Manager Miks Balodis and Valmiera City Council Chairman Jānis Baiks, media representatives were informed about the goals of involving the Bertāns brothers in Valmiera’s youth basketball system.
Latvian basketball stars Dāvis Bertāns and Dairis Bertāns, who have scaled the heights of the NBA and EuroLeague basketball, have not forgotten the region of their birth, where a strong foundation was built for their professional careers. They have proved that by working hard it is possible to achieve sporting success and compete with the world’s best basketball stars.
As basketball player Dāvis Bertāns explains, “We’ve had this idea of establishing a basketball school for some time. Since the opportunity arose to found the school together with Valmiera City Council and the basketball club in a place where the youth basketball system is already at a high level, and in light of our family history in both Valmiera and Rūjiena basketball, this is a great opportunity to launch this now. I hope that this event will go down positively in the history books. We’re truly delighted with the support!”
This season Valmiera will already be represented in the Latvian Youth Championship by Bertāns Valmiera Basketball School, which will take the pupils from the Valmiera Children’s Sports School’s Basketball Department under its wing. The team of Valmiera youth basketball trainers will be joined by other professionals from the sport, providing wider opportunities for the development of young talent. Likewise, the development of the organisation will make it possible to work on attracting additional funding to build infrastructure and facilities for Valmiera youth basketball. The experience and presence of the Bertāns brothers will be a major benefit for the already strong Valmiera basketball system.
According to VALMIERA GLASS VIA Basketball Club General Manager Miks Balodis: “On behalf of VALMIERA GLASS VIA Basketball Club, we are very honoured that the Bertāns brothers have decided to play an active role in the development of Valmiera’s youth basketball system. Historically, Valmiera’s basketball youth system has been one of the best in the country and has regularly supplied players for both youth and adult teams. A competitive youth system is also the foundation for the functioning of a professional club, and this has always been one of VALMIERA GLASS VIA Basketball Club’s priorities. Together with Valmiera City Council and the Bertāns brothers, in founding the Bertāns Valmiera Basketball School, we will be able to continue the development of the youth basketball system, which has to date successfully operated under the wing of Valmiera Children’s Sports School. Likewise, this step will definitely make it possible to implement a range of planned activities much earlier, starting from the 2020/2021. The Bertāns Valmiera Basketball School must become one of the best basketball schools in Latvia and continue to provide Latvian national teams with well-prepared players. We hope that in future the network of the school’s supporters will expand with the addition of other basketball stars, who have become professional players, developing their talent at the Bertāns Valmiera Basketball School, and who will follow in the footsteps of the Bertāns brothers by being ready to support the work of the basketball school. On behalf of VALMIERA GLASS VIA Basketball Club, we would like to extend our sincerest thanks to the Bertāns family for its courage and enterprise in getting involved in the founding of the basketball school. Thanks also to Valmiera City Council and Jānis Baiks for the support of Valmiera basketball.”
It is worth noting that Valmiera enjoys an outstanding relationship with the Bertāns brothers. For the past two years, it has organised youth basketball masterclasses. Likewise, with the support of the Bertāns family, a basketball court is currently being built at Jānis Daliņš Stadium, which is due to be opened this autumn.
According to Valmiera City Council Chairman Jānis Baiks, “Valmiera has strong basketball traditions, which are being continued thanks to Valmiera Children’s Sports School and VALMIERA GLASS VIA Basketball Club. The involvement of the Bertāns brothers in Valmiera’s youth basketball system testifies to the love for basketball in Valmiera and its support for the development of the basketball stars of the future. Naturally, we are grateful to our fans, who not only enable to scale great heights but support us during the difficult training process. For young basketball players, the Bertāns brothers are role models and an inspiration for what can be achieved through hard goal-oriented work in pursuit of a dream. This joint project of Dāvis Bertāns and Dairis Bertāns, VALMIERA GLASS VIA Basketball Club and Valmiera City Council will promote the development of young talent and the opportunity for players to prove themselves not only in Latvia, but also in building high level careers at basketball clubs all over the world. We hope that Valmiera will be a springboard for success!”
The founders of the Bertāns Valmiera Basketball School are Dāvis Bertāns, Dairis Bertāns, Vidzeme Basketball Club and Valmiera City Council.
The Bertāns Valmiera Basketball School will implement a professional educational programme in basketball with the goal of raising a new and competitive generation of athletes in Valmiera, facilitating the development of Valmiera as the centre of a basketball in the region of Vidzeme.
