Most of the sports training centres of the Vidzeme Region are located in Valmiera. There are about 40 sport organizations in Valmiera and you can go in for more than 30 kinds of sports. The most popular ones are basketball, football, BMX, volleyball, floor-ball, swimming and athletics.

Valmiera is one of the most popular sports centres of Latvia. Since Jānis Daliņš – the champion in speed-walking in the 1920’s – made the name of Latvia and Valmiera well known to the whole world. In the national sports centre, a stadium named after Jānis Daliņš, you can play football, basketball, volleyball, do track-and-field athletics. Near the stadium is an ice hockey rink and within the stadium is a training facility for heavy athletics.

Every summer the President’s Cup in track-and-field athletics competition is organized in honour of the President.

Not far from the stadium, on the river Gauja is a rowing slalom track “Krācītes”, where state and regional competitions take place. Modern facilities and management promote this track as the best rowing slalom track in the Baltic States. This track is also very popular among tourists. There is a nice recreation park with sports grounds and swimming places near the track.

The tourism and sports complex “Baiļi” is famous in Latvia for its downhill skiing slopes. There is a track for BMX nearby. More information: www.baili.lv
