On Saturday, October 8, from 9 a.m. till 3.p.m. the annual Latvian arts and crafts fair „Simjūds” will take place in the territory of Valmiera Old Town and Town Hall Square. Every year the fair gathers more than 200 craftsmen and traders from different reģions of Latvia.
The visitors of the fair will be offered to buy various crafts and housemade food from local farmers. Entertainment and culture program will also be offered.
The tradition of the annual fair in Valmiera started in Medieval times when on October 28, 1283 on the day St.Sīmanis the church of Valmiera was established. During the Medieval times, “Simjūds” was the biggest fair in the Northern Vidzeme, where craftsmen and traders came not only from Vidzeme region but from all the regions of Latvia.
In previous years, “Simjūds” were the place where inhabitants of Valmiera and the guests could buy pottery works, wooden spoons, wickerwork, herbal teas, knitted gloves and socks, honey, traditional jewellery, gingerbread hearts and other useful things.
